Windsor Baptist Annual Report 2006
Missionary Committee Report
Having 'our other Pastor', Roy Gamble, with us regularly at Missionary Committee is a great stimulus. Roy has special responsibility for mission at Windsor. Our first concern as a committee is that of the individual missionary, whether at home or abroad. Roy's 18 years as Director for SIM in Ireland, prior to his appointment at Windsor, has given him a wealth of experience and insight, which we all appreciate.
Our first task of 2006 was to revise the Re-Entry document. Nigel and Carolyn Younge were a great help in attending the sub-committee meetings in January 06, where we had a good look at the document, updated it (after only a year!) and made adjustments. We hope that in years to come, we can keep this document updated and useful for those returning home.
Missionary Sunday was on May 7th, when we were well informed by Sandra & Adrian Boone who were home for a short break from Pokhara, Nepal; Naomi Jones at home from Capetown, S.Africa, and Nigel & Carolyn Younge, along with Hannah and Jonnie, home to stay, from Niger, W.Africa. At this service, we decommissioned the Younge family! We also commissioned them, in officially welcoming them back into the church family. Ian Grant, SIM’s Director for Ireland, spoke appropriately to us all, notably about our responsibilities towards this family as they settle into life in UK. This event earned space in the June issue of 'Baptist Life' – with photo!
During Missionary Sunday, a survey was handed to the congregation about the Missionary Prayer Digest. Isobel Thompson, assisted by Evelyn Greer, had worked hard on 6 issues over 2 years and we wanted to find out how useful it was being in informing and stimulating prayer. Sadly, we found that it was not being well used; rather, nonchalance prevailed. For a few months, the committee thought and prayed over what to do strongly feeling it to be absolutely necessary that our congregation be equipped with fuel for prayer. In November, Roy produced an electronic form of missionary news, culled from contact with our personnel. This is now being produced monthly and it is proposed to continue. All of the membership and adherents at Windsor automatically receive a copy. Those without e-mail access can obtain a hard copy by asking Roy. Since we know prayer is crucial for the success and safety of any missionary, our hope is that Windsor MPD is now better used. As we are well informed, then the responsibility to pray is OURS.
Nearly all of our monthly meetings contain interview time when a person from our missionary personnel meets us to tell us exactly how it is with them. Questions are organised among us to help elicit the responses we're looking for, and yes! the interviewee has copy of the questions before the meetings, so knows what to expect!
A lot of time is spent on interview, then we enjoy a much more informal time over supper together – a great way to get better acquainted.
The year has seen Charles & Ruth Beattie, with Caleb (3) accepted by Mission Africa (the old Qua Iboe Mission). They were commissioned in Windsor and left for Jos, Nigeria on 24th October. At the same service, Margo Morrow was commissioned to go to Peru with Baptist Missions. After an intensive four week TEFL course in London, Margo left on 7th January 07. Trevor Warner, with Operation Mobilisation in St. Petersburg, Russia, was appointed Field Leader in October.
A change of chairperson on the committee came about in January when Alison Warke was appointed to succeed Isobel Thompson. Alison ably leads us, along with Roy Gamble. The present Committee is: Roy Gamble, Paul Graham, Evelyn Greer, Jean Hillis, Mary Mackrell, John McCormick, Diane McMullan, Paul Patterson, Isobel Thompson, Alison Warke and Nicola Wheeler. We meet monthly in each other's homes.
